I’m getting so tired of the homophobia from the ā€˜left’. But please, make a hundred more posts about how some right wing politician loves cock because they support Trump. That’s not a sentiment that needs to be examined at all 🫩

(This is not an invitation to tell me how that’s not akchully about gay people or to drag out a handful of gay republicans to complain about, when you know people do it for the straight ones too.)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone say that, that someone likes cock because they support trump. That’s just plain homophobia, and needs to be called exactly for what it is, 100% agree.

What I do see frequently, however, is people saying that some dude must be a repressed gay man because they’re defending some point about sexuality that is so extremist and outrageous, that a normal person (gay or otherwise) would struggle to even come up with, let alone defend. Not rarely do we see that this was actually the case, or even worse, they turn out to be real monsters that abuse children…

This (clarification: my post) was specifically in response to a post about Mike Johnson that called him a creepy dude with incest vibes for involving his daughter in a purity ball (fair), and immediately went on to talk about how he must have a Grindr account and love cock?? Absolutely no reasonable connection, just straight up ā€˜guy I hate = degenerate, degenerate = gay’ ideology. I see it on fedi an unfortunate amount, and people are defensive as hell about how ā€˜it’s not actually homophobia!!’ to say shit like that.

I reject the premise that there aren’t numerically more fucked up repressed straight people than gay ones. Defaulting to ā€˜this dude is a sexual weirdo, must be gay’ is also homophobia.

Another version of this is people, even left-leaning people, thinking we shouldn’t respect the identities of people in prison, or that prisoners shouldn’t have access to gender-affirming care or not.

You either respect the legitimacy of trans identities or you don’t. Yet even many left leaning folks treat gender identity as a privilege that someone earns, something that can be revoked if a person commits a crime or has bad opinions on some issue. When someone does this, they are proving that they don’t actually respect trans lives, no matter how many times they use the word ā€œvalid.ā€ If you oppose trans care for prisoners, you are intrinsically saying that you don’t actually believe in trans healthcare and that you see it as somehow apart or anything other than the life-saving treatment it is. You don’t get to deny medical care to someone just because they’re in prison. Yet many, even those nominally in favor of trans rights, reveal their true colors when the rights of prisoners are brought up.

Yep, and right along with that are prison rape jokes. Rape is an abhorrent act that can dehumanize the victim, but they did a crime so that makes it ok.

I had someone essentially accuse me of purity testing and doing ā€œleftist infightingā€ for calling this shit out (ā€œguy I don’t like = cocksuckerā€). Like uh sure there’s bigger problems we have to worry about right now but that doesn’t mean what you’re doing is ok either. These guys claim to be such allies, but are practically allergic to a simple ā€œhey please don’t do that it’s kind of bigoted even though it’s attacking a bad personā€

it’s absolutely rampant and i have stopped using lemmy so much bc it’s gross and tiring. Find any popular political post involving trump and putin and there will be homophobic comments like you describe, call them out and you’ll get dogpiled and shit on. Bunch of immature little boys on the fediverse these days and i’m over it.

If I assume good intentions in the people you are talking about, maybe this is a case of different assumed contexts between speaker and listener. Some people have just seen the ā€œanother republican known for actively harming LGBT+ folks revealed as closeted self-loathing assholeā€ cliche so many times that it’s a go-to comment for that specific type of person.

So it wouldn’t be that all people you don’t like are gay. More like the outspoken conservatives you don’t like. Admittedly that’s still painting with a broad brush.

With all that said, I can’t assume good intentions across the board so there are plenty of people for whom you are correct.

And it gets even worse with the apparent popularity of pedophilia among the world’s elite. Conservatives have already spent many years framing any sex stuff they personally find icky to be equally evil and bad for society.

I hear what you’re saying, but assuming these men (and it’s almost always men, I rarely hear homophobic women get called lesbians) are gay and not just straight homophobes is itself homophobic, because it places the blame for homophobia on queer people. As if the decision to be closeted happens in a vacuum, or as if the majority of closeted people are homophobic and don’t want to be out.

It’s nothing more than confirmation bias; the straight Republican bigots are unremarkable to most people, so they don’t remember them.

I agree. It’s the hypocrisy. Being gay here is incidental, it’s just one manifestation of the whole ā€œthis is unacceptable, we need [outrageous measure]ā€ and then they get exposed for doing exactly what they were complaining about.

It’s a mostly joking labeler I subscribe to that tags everyone that way if they signed up for Bluesky while it was still invite-only. Nobody tagged with it has opted in to it, I just see it because I’m subscribed to the labeler
