an ally hater, love to see it
Whatās wrong with Elliot Pageās acting? I thought he was fine in previous works Iāve seen him in. Maybe not Oscar-winning but Iāve seen plenty worse.
I think heās forgettable, but I wouldnāt say bad. There are actors who really stand out with a lack of acting ability. Heās just boring.
Absolutely nothing. If you make through Juno without at least grudging appreciation for his craft, I donāt know what to tell you.
I was so pumped on him after Juno, but I havenāt loved him in anything since.
I liked him in Super with Rainn Wilson. It wasnāt a perfect movie but I thought his performance was fine and it was a fitting movie to anticipate the Marvel saturation in the coming years (which director James Gunn would eventually actively participate in).
I also thought he was fine in Inception. Not the standout performance of the movie but I didnāt walk out thinking āugh, Elliot Page really gunked that upā or anything, and he apparently worked well enough with Christopher Nolan to get brought back in for The Odyssey.
Very good shout out with Super. I had forgotten that and he was truly amazing in it! While I donāt think he as terrible in Inception I donāt think it was a very good fit.
Iām partial to Whip It too, but thatās probably just a me-thing.
Fair enough, he was fine in it but far from the main draw for me.
TBF Iāve just been really into Drew Barrymore since I saw ET in the theatre.
I can understand that.
frankly never seen him in anything (not even Inception)
Oh wow, hes so forgettable, I forgot he was in Inceptionā¦
frankly never seen him in anything (not even Inception)
inception was fun, you should try it. Watch it on the worst display device you can for extra points (Nolan wanted people to get covid and make the pandemic worse, because he wanted people to see Tenet in cinemas instead of at home during the height of the pandemic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenet_(film)#Theatrical )
Same. I havenāt seen him in much (Umbrella Academy most recently), but he seems to be a decent actor. Nothing to get excited about, but not a bad actor by any stretch. Heās better than average, imo. I donāt understand the hate.
Looking at his profile, I didnāt even know there was a Flatliners remake. Gonna have to go watch that now.
Definitely donāt agree with the commenterās take on his acting, but what a utopian future it would be if everyone could be critical of a personās work while also remaining an ally.
I liked him in that Hard Candy movie but I havenāt seen that since I was 12 so maybe it hasnāt aged well
How do you refer to trans people in the past? Like, Elliot was Ellen back when he did those movies, do you still call him he even though he was a she when he did the thing? I think Iām confusing myself now
In the absence of particular knowledge about an individualās preferences or conception of their transition, my default assumption would be to refer to them with their current preferred terminology, even if that wasnāt how they presented at that time. Or, rather, I wouldnāt think of it as āhe was a she when he did the thingā, instead itās closer to āhe was always a he, even if he didnāt know he wasnāt a she at the timeā.
However, Iām a cis male, so maybe donāt accept my default behaviors as gospel truth in this arena lol. If I were to transition, itās how Iād think of the process. However, a gal I used to bartend with absolutely divides her life into her Chad phase and then her Callie phase. For whatever reason, thatās what works for her, and Iāll work within that context if it comes up.
As a general rule, I would always use current preferred pronouns. If context is really needed for some reason Iād say something like "In Juno, before he transitioned, he wasā¦ā
The general wisdom is to use the personās current identification and project it into the past. He was always Elliot. We didnāt know then, but we know that now.
Some individuals will have a different understanding of their personal journey. (I was a boy then, but now Iām a woman)
Personally I struggle with referring to child me as a girl. I didnāt look like a girl or act like a stereotypical girl, and certainly wasnāt treated as a girl. But I donāt think I was really a boy either.
I do prefer for people to use my name now about past me, not my name then.
I stick with current pronouns usually but I think both are okay, he identified as a girl when he was in that movie and played the role of a girl, so I think calling at least the character āsheā is perfectly legit⦠when talking about the actor I go with āheā, but I dunno. Yeah I guess itās up to the person Iām talking aboutās opinion?
The character is certainly a she. Juno is a girl. Men can play women and women can play men.
Elliot was a young man playing a girl, even if we didnāt know that at the time.
Donāt worry it holds up. Also a great Patrick Wilson role.
That one and āmouth to mouthā š
otoh gaycation was amazing and i wish we could get another season especially given all of this gestures at the world
What is otoh gaycation? Havenāt heard of it and need an escape from reality right now.
otoh = on the other hand
also donāt watch gaycation if you need an escape from reality, itās the exact opposite of that
yeah gaycation was elliotās show before transition where he went around the world looking at lgbtq life and communities in various countries (the most famous episode being brazil where he faced off against future president, bolsonaro).
sorry; i didnāt mean it as an escape; i meant itās needed as an education and expression of lgbt life in the face of hate.
itās okay, i didnāt think u meant it as one.
What type of escape from reality are you looking for? Iāve officially seen too many shows, maybe I can recommend something. Does it have to be gay though? I just donāt think Iāve seen any fun LGBT focused stuff lately.
Yea I kind of agree and it pains me a little because I have some sympathy for the guy
