Observation 1: we are seriously here discussing which big tech platform people use to listen to the maybe the last truly decentralised media.

Observation 2: the discussion makes sense in the context.

We really fucked up this internet thing, didn’t we?

I actually think that podcasts are a success story in that respect. 2015-2020 saw a lot of money getting thrown into the podcast space, and despite billions of dollars going into it and a bunch of exclusivity deals, nobody was actually able to take any real market dominance.

Now, that might’ve been because podcasts are kind of tied to platforms inherently (and without deciding the iPhone vs Android debate you can’t decide the Apple Podcasts vs YouTube debate), but that’s buoyed by the fact that the platform is essentially nothing more than the protocol, and it was given a solid decade to become what it is today without a ton of meddling.

So, yeah. Billions of dollars went in, everyone decided they couldn’t make any real money there, and so the big companies left the market. The fact that Rogan isn’t exclusive to Spotify anymore is just the latest example. Corporations lost. Podcasting won.

I would argue it’s one of few ways people listen to podcasts. And seeing as the article is talking about Joe Rogan, who is on Spotify exclusively, it kind of makes sense to look at Spotify statistics, no? Do you still feel so smart?

By that logic, if Joe Rogan had his own podcast streaming platform, only streaming his own podcast, by definition no one could ever have more downloads than him.

I mean, I guess? But that’s nothing like what we’re talking about here. I’m not even sure what you people are arguing? Spotify - 35th, Apple - 20th, Of the top 100 podcasts, across all sites, Meidas is #20.

Okay, I’ve done the research. They’re still not above Joe Rogan. Which is what my original comment was shedding light on. But apparently you people WANT misinformation, so long as it fits your narrow-minded views lol.

Go do the research yourself. I could not find any site that listed Meidas above Joe Rogan. If you don’t want to accept that, and just argue everything, that’s on you. Stay lied to. You know what they say - ignorance is bliss.

So you’re saying that looking at Spotify is going to be even more misleading because 100% of Joe Rogan’s listeners are there vs not all listeners of other podcasts?

Considering there’s many podcast platforms, and Joe Rogan is only on one. Looking at just Spotify statistics is the worst way to tell what the overall statistics look like.
