  • It’s not that I’m getting scammed directly. It’s just the sheer prevalence of them, how much they clog up my feed, and FB’s unwillingness to do anything about them. It seems no matter how much they’re reported, I get the same “We’ve looked into it and found no issues” message. I agree having a payment platform built into the marketplace is nice, but that’s basically the sole benefit I see vs Craigslist.

    My issues just really come down to how awful the search function is, and how filters do literally nothing. No matter how irrelevant the items might be to your search, they still feel the need to show you *something *, literally anything to maybe convince you to click on another item.

    A while ago I was shopping for a piano, and given how difficult they are to move, I was looking in a fairly small area in Michigan, and some very specific brands/models. Naturally, this meant that when there wasn’t anything that fit those filters, it filled my list with pianos anywhere from Kentucky to South Africa, which at least to my knowledge, is a bit outside the 40mi radius I had set.

    It does this constantly, which makes it insanely frustrating because I’ll find something that is within the state in a town I don’t recognize, get interested, only to find out it’s 4 hours away. It doesn’t even bother doing the “We couldn’t find anything that matches, so here are some similar items” thing. Just straight up puts items into the feed that don’t match my search criteria whatsoever, all for the sake of filling it with literally anything it possibly can.

    Maybe it’s better for items that can be shipped, but I almost exclusively use Marketplace for local shopping/large items (like cars and pianos), so having even a basic thing like the search radius not even work is a major pain to say the least.


  • Except it’s not. The filtering, sort, and search functions are truly awful compared to Craigslist, especially if you’re looking for cars. I find so many mislabeled cars because FB Marketplace has an extremely limited set of models and manufacturers, and also has a stupid system where you can’t price late model cars way over KBB, so people have to price things with really stupid values to get around it.

    Not to mention the sheer number of blatant scams that Facebook does literally nothing about, regardless of how blatant they are and number of reports. I’ve seen accounts that have 1 star and have dozens of comments about how they’re blatant scammers, but their accounts are still up and they’re still running the same scam. Craigslist had its fair number of scammers, but it didn’t take much to report and get them taken down usually.






  • Okay, I’m going to go against the grain here and say “Don’t go with the really cheap online glasses”.

    I used eyebuydirect, Zenni, and a couple of others for many years, and was pretty happy with them, especially for the price. However, one thing I’d always noticed is that they’d wind up being pretty beat up with some large scratches in the coatings, or they’d just fail and start flaking off by around the 1 year mark (I’m pretty hard on my glasses, tbf) and I absolutely had to get new ones. I just kind of accepted that I was very hard on my glasses, and that’s what happens.

    However, I started going to Costco just because my insurance wouldn’t cover any of the online places, and the quality of the lenses and coatings are absolutely night and day. I’ve had 10 pairs now (sunglasses and normal lenses), and only had one with a single scratch in the lenses, after having them go flying across a cement floor due to me doing something quite stupid.

    I don’t think you need a membership for their optical center either, but I’m not 100% sure.


  • It’s definitely possible to recal or replace the hardware, it’s just way easier to recal that replace hardware.

    One example I can think of is one project whose calibration and braking performance meant it was just eking out a pass, but because of the transition to copper-free brake pads, was now hitting the target. It wasn’t a huge deal, and we had to recalibrate it to brake a bit earlier.

    VW (and Mercedes) is a pretty special case in terms of their industry pull. When I worked at a German Tier 1, it was very much a case of if they say “jump” you asked, “how high?”. They have such a massive output of vehicles, as a supplier, you’ll do anything possible to try and maintain their business. Even being on the team for NA/LATAM customers, we’d be told to sideline what we were working on to support stuff for VW/Mercedes, even though we saw literally no benefit from it as the NA team, and it could seriously hurt some of the projects we were working on. However, the reality was that the business from VW alone was larger than basically every other project we had combined, so it was worth it to piss off our other customers to keep them happy.

    I also welcome standard AEB, but I’m not convinced customers are going to like it to be entirely honest. With how the regulation is written, it’s asking a lot from OEMs in terms of performance, and with perfect performance being required to even just sell a vehicle, I fear that we’re going to wind up with ultra-sensitive systems with heaps of false-positive/“phantom braking” reactions, just to ensure they pass the regs. NHTSA in all their infinite wisdom did include some very basic FP testing, but not an acceptable rate of FP per X number of miles. Also, because of the extremely high nighttime requirements, expect headlights to get even more blinding in the coming years…



  • Not really back to the drawing board, but more than likely recalibrating the system to improve performance. EU-NCAP /CN-NCAP are a much bigger deal, at least for vehicles that are sold in the EU/CN market, and poor performance on those can mean pushing for larger changes. But even then, they’re seldom “back to the drawing board” just because at that point it’s usually way too late in production to make significant changes.

    In the US, the new FMVSS 127 requirements are a huge fucking deal, and are making huge waves in the industry right now. Because they’re regulatory, meaning if you don’t pass you can’t sell the vehicle in the US, they’ve taken what’s been a generally low priority in the US to basically priority #1, especially given how tough the requirements are.

    We are quite literally going to have to rework basically every single vehicle model we sell to meet it, some of them quite significantly, so it’s a much bigger deal than stuff like the IIHS requirements.


  • Oh, trust me, I’m well aware of that issue. There’s a lot I can say about that as well, but my point was more how I see this type of article posted time and time again, with Tesla a lot of the time, of “Company patents X feature, here’s how it’ll be the greatest/worst feature in [current model year+1] vehicles!” and it really isn’t the case at all. I know of plenty more dystopian shit going on in the industry as a whole, so I know it’s not a 0% chance of something like this being implemented. I just felt it’s worth being a voice of reason in saying that this isn’t necessarily a feature coming to to the MY27, just because someone had some spare time to put together a PowerPoint of an idea they had to submit to Ford’s IP lawyers.


  • So, I’m going to be a voice of reason here, also working for a a major US automaker: there’s a 0.0001% chance this would ever be a thing implemented, and is almost definitely just something someone brainstormed and threw in the patent/IP registration system for a nice bonus. We’re heavily encouraged to submit ideas, even if there’s no real plans to ever implement them, and you can make more than $2k for a couple day’s worth of work in some cases.

    I’ve come up with some hilariously dystopian ideas, and I’m more than happy to submit them because I know we’ll never bother with implementing them, it keeps other more “ambitious” OEMs from doing it, and the aforementioned monetary bonuses. Just because something is patented, doesn’t mean it’s going into production next week.

    Also, because I know what sub I’m in, before everyone crucifies me here because I work for an automaker, I do so because I want to make a change from the inside, and my job focus is primarily on making vehicles safer for pedestrians and cyclists.




  • This had an interesting part in Westworld, where at one point they go to a big database of minds that have been “backed up” in a sense, and they’re fairly simple “code books” that define basically all of the behaviors of a person. The first couple seasons have some really cool ideas on how consciousness is formed, even if the later seasons kind of fell apart IMO


  • Having both an extremely enjoyable and fulfilling job, as well as having a long sabbatical that same year, fucking around can honestly get boring real fast.

    All those ADHD traits pile up real fast and I honestly felt worse day-to-day than I did working absurd hours at a job I really like. There’s a balance, but honestly having fulfilling structured work to fill at least part of the day is super important. I’ve personally noticed that I tend to go a bit batty even if work is slow and I’ve not got much to do, so having that bit of structure really helps.
