The point of a diagnosis is so I can get the care and accommodations I need.
The reason I’m protective of the diagnosis criteria is not because I’m somehow enamored with the label, it’s because it’s fundamentally a resource allocation problem and you are stealing services that I need to function from me.
People aren’t getting resources without a pfofessional diagnosis.
This is no reason to gatekeep.
The thing is, those resources are directly under threat if autism is something that everybody has. That narrative turns it into an issue of personal coping skills, and not something anybody else should offer help with or accommodations for.
It’s an excuse to tell people who need help to fuck off.
But do you really want to rob kids of their attention and tiktok careers? For that?

Indeed! And sorry for your experience.
There’s two sides of the coin. One, correct diagnosis “saves” lives, in that it gets true resources to those who need them. Two, appropriating diagnosis to explain social awkwardness or eccentricity does a disservice to true autistics and strains resources.
But it’s hard to get awareness without appropriation.
