Does anyone know why this might happen? I woke up this morning, my phone and my wife’s (who both share an account) had switched themselves off. Also my Ipad and IMac had. Has anyone had this happen and what does it mean?

Wish I could upvote this more than once. Apple IDs are not meant to be shared. It will cause a whole mess of issues. I used to work Apple support and can’t tell you how many times I had to help people untangle this.

Question: were your impacted devices actively charging while sleeping AND were there any weather events last night?

I am thinking maybe fluctuations in the power line might have caused the devices to shutoff and protect themselves. Usually, this is not an issue if you use a power surge protector between the wall and devices; or surge protection at the circuit breaker panel.

Also, would like to repeat what others have said about sharing iCloud accounts. It would be best to setup individual accounts for everybody and setup a “Family” if you want to share purchases (IAPs, Apple TV, …)

They were charging. We have surge protection on the circuit breaker panel. Could it have been too low a surge to flip the breaker but too high for the IOS devices? It didn’t happen again last night, so thats a positive.

Thanks for the advice on Family accounts (you and everyone else who have mentioned it). I already have my daughter on a separate account, but will spilt my wife off for security reasons.

You didn’t provide any info besides “turned off”. Can you turn them back on? Did your devices get wiped? How old are the devices and whats the battery health status?

They were off. I was able to turn them back on again but they were all off in the morning. I missed an alarm but everything else was fine when i turned them on.

Battery health is fine - 90% on my phone and 86% on my wife’s. Its the fact that our phones, Ipad and IMac were all off which is a bit weird.

Phone ages are 1 and 2 years. Imac is a year old and the ipad is 2.

Okay that’s weird. There are a few possibilities I could think of:

        1. Your devices are all in an area of extreme temperatures, so the devices shut off because they are outside of normal operating temperatures.

        2. You turned the devices off and forgot that you did, temporary amnesia.

        3. A hacker turned off all your devices to mess with you. (Or someone in your home turned off all your devices as a prank.)

        4. Your house is leaking carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause you to have memory issues. Famous reddit thread: reddit link (archive.is)

Given I don’t know what your home temperature is, I’m gonna assume the first scenario is most likely.
