I had no idea carvings this adjacent to the ocean could last that long. On that fact alone, this area should be protected and recorded as best we can. What I know of preservation, my first instinct upon reading that a historian was pushing sand into the petroglyphs to highlight them was horror! But duh, what the hell is she doing that the ocean hasn’t been doing for centuries. And the glyphs still remain! So cool, thanks for sharing.

The people in the video are talking like this is commonplace in Portland. Is this mobile drug manufacturing? Mobile prostitution? Do they move the RVs often to avoid police? Are they stealing the RVs or is there some black market?
It just seems organized. Thanks ahead for any insight.
Semisimian@startrek.websiteto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•SteamOS 3.7.13 update gets fixes for more handhelds, fixes WiFi regression on Steam Deck OLEDEnglish1·2 months agoI have a dedicated windows 10 PC for gaming only. Microsoft is actively trying to brick my machine. I have to read the fine print to make sure I’m not agreeing to the 11 “update.” I feel held hostage - it sucks.
I’m thinking of going to steamOS - I’m a casual gamer that just needs it to work when I have the spare minute to fire up a game. I don’t have time to do much troubleshooting, but I will make time so I don’t get locked into a console. Shrugging emoji.

Semisimian@startrek.websiteto Science@mander.xyz•New psychology research uncovers surprisingly consistent misjudgments of tattooed individualsEnglish16·2 months agoThe meat of the article: "Overall, people were fairly consistent in how they judged tattoos. Raters tended to agree with one another about what certain tattoo features might suggest about personality. For instance, cheerful and colorful tattoos were linked to impressions of higher agreeableness. Large, traditional-looking tattoos were associated with higher extraversion. Tattoos that appeared low in quality or included death imagery led raters to perceive the wearer as more neurotic or less agreeable.
However, these judgments were largely inaccurate. When the researchers compared how participants were rated with how they described themselves, most of the links between tattoo features and personality fell apart. Except for one pattern: people who had tattoos described by raters as “wacky” were somewhat more likely to score higher on openness to experience in their self-assessments"
Semisimian@startrek.websiteto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think the most famous phone number of all time is ?English11·2 months agoBefore Jenny, there was Pennsylvania 6-5000. From wiki:
“Many big band musicians played in Hotel Pennsylvania’s Cafe Rouge in New York City, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The hotel’s telephone number, Pennsylvania 6-5000, inspired the Glenn Miller 1940 Top 5 Billboard hit of the same name.”
And similarly, Transylvania 6-5000, which is where I first heard it.
I like two strong vocal leads playing off each other. I’m thinking Alice in Chains, B-52s, the Beths. I have more, but have to close the app and do some real work.

Semisimian@startrek.websiteto Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Interview: Tawny Newsome On Finding The Sweet Spot For Her Star Trek Workplace ComedyEnglish5·3 months agoIt’s a comedy, so I hope so too! I imagine the planet, being a vacation/pleasure planet, will have a lot of kinks that are taboo to the Federation and that’s where you will find the narrative tension as they apply for membership. The planet will have a constitution at odds with the Fed, full of kinks. They might welcome species that have kinks not outlined in said constitution. They might welcome federation citizens that are exploring their non-Fed kinks on this planet.
We’ve seen plenty of criticism of the Federation’s nanny-state. Lately, that criticism has come from the writers of the shows who seem to have lost the narrative that the Federation is our ideal. Sure, it has issues, but none of us should be ashamed of reaching for utopia. I hope the new show is a continuation of the SNW and Prodigy reboot of a less cynical Trek.

Kang, Koloth and Kor had plastic surgery to restore their ridges. From this, I could only assume that the writers might show a smooth forehead Klingon and give a character, probably a young one, a throwaway line to pay a little fan service.
I really enjoy the lengths that the writers go to connect the many decades of Trek. It just proves that they are nerds themselves, as it should be.

If the powers that be are trying to trigger another Great Depression, what is their end goal?
In the US, since the 60s, we have been steadily marching towards the complete privatization of all industries. With the current administration clearly dismantling the federal government and saying things like opening up the public parks for private interests, I think this is their end game. The first Great Depression led to strong government intervention; now, with a mere shell of a federal government, the only ones poised to act after a second Great Depression would be entrenched corporations.
They will buy all the land from bankrupt farmers and carve the US up into smaller corporate States. Individual Americans will own nothing. The corporate States will jockey back and forth to drive profits up at the expense of all natural and labor resources.
It will be hell.

The Romulan Ale sounds way too sweet, though. I think 151, soda and Curacao for color with the rock candy garnish dropped in the drink would be more fitting for something that is supposed to be so strong it’s illegal.
I want to see how big those Targ legs are.
I know her job is to work with feet, but I still hope they know each other. Well.
