As far as I can tell it separates the base os from user changes which could break things by forcing you to use containers by annoying you to death any time you’re trying to permanently install a package.

Agreed, it not fair and I appreciate the breakdown. I just get frustrated with the (more common on Lemmy) attitude that it’s up to users to deal with linux’ many many shortcomings for daily use that are in your category 1, especially.

My view is that you need to pick something in line with your goals: some people may be techy but just need something to host files and a web browser and don’t care about new packages or whatever, or modern security or anything. I wouldn’t recommend mint or fedora for a gaming PC regardless of techiness, you know?
To be fair the nobara website is very “pet project” both in the design and also in the frequent warnings about using it for anything real. Is a good distro tho, having said that.
Agreed, this is the distro that worked best for my needs (modern security, without wanting to die from maintenance of that security)
To be fair arch has amazing docs, and even a rube like me can follow it decently well. I found endeavor to be the easiest distro to use. But agreed the attitude isn’t great.

Actual tldr seems to be: There was an option to hardcode cpu count intended for fixed devices as in embedded systems where you might compile the kernel specifically for your device. This made it slightly smaller and faster. People did dumb things with this and used it so wrong that the toy was taken away.

Re slippery slope, conservatives love them: for trans rights it’s “I identify as an attack helicopter”, 20 years ago it was “what if people want to marry their pets”. No real difference in the sociopathy of those offering up the suggestion, just a new front line.
I do agree there’s a line: there’s on one part the paradox of acceptance or whatever it’s called which is explicit. In this case we are also saying it’s weird to hold beliefs that are so out of touch with reality or the people they impact. It’s weird to care what restroom people use, especially for those of us in states that have removed the victorian stigma on all-gender shitters. It’s weird to care what sports other people play. It’s weird to make up lies about Olympic athletes in order to push your agenda of making life worse for a 12 year old in Virginia. It’s all weird.
