I hope this makes it easier to do TLS sniffing and security research on Android apps. A lot of developers seem to rely on no one simply looking at how much information is exposed in the APIs apps use. Currently because it’s much more difficult to sniff Android apps, a lot of privacy/security issues are not raised.

The Play Integrity API is less about security and more about Google asserting their monopoly.

They do not want truly open source Android platforms to gain popularity, because there would be a high chance people would want ad blocking, which is a direct threat to their profit margins.

I hope EU takes regulative action to force Google to allow GrapheneOS, LineageOS etc. to be able to run the same apps without issues.

Which apps do you mean?

You answered this already: apps that use the Play Integrity API. Includes some local banking apps, some random ones and Google Wallet. I wish app developers didn’t use those APIs, but they are probably not aware of the implications or don’t care.

I also have LineageOS 21 and Magisk 27, and WhatsApp works without issues. I don’t remember having to do anything. But I have a different phone.

Maybe the Pixel 8 LineageOS images have some issues?

As a finn, I understand that there are probably legal reasons for doing this.

I just wish they would be transparent and share those reasons with us. The Linux kernel is certainly not the only free software project that is impacted, if this comes straight from EU/US sanctions. Maintainers of other projects have a lot of interest in what is happening.

Transparency is also important because if EU/US policy/sanctions are causing issues for free software projects, then that discussion needs to be public, so that there is a chance to amend the policies if necessary.

Yes, not only is it realistic, it has actually happened. It’s easier to write code than understand it. Even when reviewing code, you miss more or less obvious issues. Not to mention intentional vulnerabilities that can be sneaked in over multiple commits and time span long enough to make reviewers forget the larger context.

Samsung phones can record calls, but you need to use SamFW to change the CSC. LineageOS does not support recent models.

OnePlus phones have better hardware specs, but I think nowadays you have to root with Magisk and use BCR for recording. That breaks banking apps. LineageOS supports some OnePlus models, but not 12.

Pixels don’t have native call recording? But GrapheneOS works on them. Again, many apps are broken.

Fairphone might be interesting, I should look into that.

I have now tested CSC changing with SamFW, and changing to SEK (Ukraine) enabled native call recording in a Samsung Galaxy device. The change persists even after inserting SIM card.

You can automatically record calls. No audible notifications to the other end. Files are saved to /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/Call/, so you can use other apps to copy them elsewhere.

pass-otp can do TOTP as well.
