And the argument was if there’s meaning behind what they generate. That argument applies to AGIs too. It’s a deeply debated philosophical question. What is meaning? Is our own thought pattern deterministic, and if it is, how do we know there’s any meaning behind our own actions?

LLMs reproduce the form of language without any meaning being transmitted. That’s called parroting.

Even if (and that’s a big if) an AGI is going to be achieved at some point, there will be people calling it parroting by that definition. That’s the Chinese room argument.

AI hasn’t been redefined. For people familiar with the field it has always been a broad term meaning code that learns (and subdivided in many types of AI), and for people unfamiliar with the field it has always been a term synonymous with AGI. So when people in the former category put out a product and label it as AI, people in the latter category then run with it using their own definition.

For a long time ML had been the popular buzzword in tech and people outside the field didn’t care about it. But then Google and OpenAI started calling ML and LLMs simply “AI” and that became the popular buzzword. And when everyone is talking about AI, and most people conflate that with AGI, the results are funny and scary at the same time.

Most people don’t like a paragraph worth of information being stretched out into a 14 minute video. Luckily someone already provided the info in another comment.

I like that there’s a name for it. I always try to do that if possible. Division by 25? You mean multiply by 4 and divide by 100. Convert miles to km? That’s x + x/2 + x/10.

Huh, good to know there’s an explanation for why I was getting no signal inside my home when I was on T-Mobile. It’s the reason I switched.

It probably depends a lot on where you live. My wife’s bike got stolen and she was woken up by police coming to check on it (one of the maintenance guys at our apartment noticed a man at 7-Eleven riding it and recognized it; came back running to check if it’s indeed missing and called the police). We fully expected the police would do nothing about it (it was the cheapest Walmart bike), but an hour later they called that they found the bike and have the culprit in custody. It did help that the bike was a girly mint green with a wicker basket, so they instantly recognized it when they saw it.

Then again, in San Francisco, when my wife got her car window smashed and wallet stolen (she was late for class and dropped her wallet under the car seat, didn’t stop to take it; but it wasn’t the wallet that caught the thieves’ attention, it was the breast pump bag that looked like a laptop bag; they threw it on the floor when they saw what it was), we never heard anything back from the police.

Logos means word. That is the confusion I was talking about. If you experience something as pure words then it should be extremely easy to verbalize.

I am confused. I’d think something experienced “as pure Logos” is the easiest to verbalize. And why is the image representing it as fractal imagery?

As a vim user myself, I don’t understand why you need relative lines either. I can just as easily type :23 to go to line 23.

The way I recall it seeing thing unfold and not really following the political stuff at the time:

CDC said that cloth masks don’t stop viruses. You need a medical mask for that, but please don’t use those because hospitals need them. That was all true.

In other countries, notably South Korea, almost everyone wore masks, and the numbers showed their effectiveness.

So CDC realized that indeed, if everyone wears one, it greatly reduces transmission of the virus. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be efficient.

I was going to say. That was just common practice in my native country. We did use the most common brand names sometimes, but even then we used them interchangeably (if we asked for Nurofen we really meant ibuprofen and didn’t care if we got another brand; like asking for a kleenex)
