It probably greatly depends on what you plan to do with your instance.
My instance is just used by me and occasionally my partner and some friends. Running it costs me nothing aside from whatever portion my energy bill is increased by having the container active in my home server. Like you, I am excited about it for the sake of the community, though I’m hard pressed to find any reason to play games on my Android phone as it is. Android games are either ad infested junk that isn’t interesting to me, or open source and playable on Linux already.
I’ve messed around with Waydroid because it sounds cool in theory, but every time I get it installed, I’m like “now what?” I can’t think of anything to actually do with it, so I imagine it’ll be the same for Lepton.
Still, very cool to have the options, and I’m happy that Linux is getting more attention as a preferred platform such that gaming companies recognize the value in supporting translation layers for it.

I just want to encourage you to reconsider. Docker (or podman) is worth taking the time to figure out. It’s not particularly difficult to learn the basics of, and is extremely powerful.
Your life as a self-hoster will be massively simplified by spending a weekend learning to use docker or podman. Not using containerization is like opting in to hard mode with dependency and configuration hell.

My 2013 Dell XPS laptop is still running beautifully with Fedora 43 too! Honestly, it’s amazing how much life a piece of old hardware can have with Linux running on it.
That looks like Ubuntu, which I believe uses a modified version of Nautilus for the file manager. Hitting CTRL-L (for “location”) should give you a path bar to type into.
If you’re like me, and you have no idea what Openclaw is, and noticed that the project linked doesn’t explain it either: Openclaw is apparently some sort of AI bot that performs tasks on your personal data without your input.
The repo README has some example code that looks like it might get you 90% of the way there to implementing railway highlights.

You could use something like WinBoat to make installing and using a virtual machine for Windows a lot easier. It also makes Windows apps feel almost like they are native to your Linux desktop, which is nice.
Alternatively, you could try running Excel in wine using Bottles, but I’m not sure how well that’ll go since Excel is kind of a monster of an application.
No, we don’t force anyone to do anything, electric replacements are offered as a “free” upgrade. We’re a housing cooperative, so technically it’s not free, but it’s paid for by the community’s collective funds.
The other main problem is that people routinely forget to turn off their stoves. We’ve had the fire department come multiple times this year alone because someone left their gas on and filled their unit with it. One resident left his gas open for who knows how long before he passed out in his living room and shit himself. Luckily someone found him and called the paramedics.
I guess if it was one person living in the wilderness and they blew themselves up or suffocated, then that’s on them. In a community though, it endangers everyone nearby.

I’m always confused by people saying that Vortex doesn’t work on Linux, when I’ve used it for years now on both my Fedora desktop and my Steam Deck. I didn’t even have to do anything outrageous to get it working. Install with Lutris like anything else made for Windows, press play, it works great.
Edit: Realized this sounded maybe judgmental, when I didn’t mean it to. Not trying to make anyone feel bad in any way. More like encouragement, because once you get over the hump of figuring out how to use tools like Lutris to run games, running Vortex is the same process.
Can’t you already do that from Nautilus with bookmarked sftp locations?
I’m not commenting to discourage other tools from being made, just curious if there’s some aspect of that process that isn’t already easy to accomplish on Linux with existing GUI tools, or if you’d like to be able to do it differently is all.
Yeah the bottom housing of my Framework 12 laptop developed spiderweb cracks in it after only 3 months. I’m the most careful person I know with my electronics, so it’s not because I’m abusing it or anything.
Framework is dragging their feet on a warranty claim too, which is frustrating since a new bottom housing replacement is only like $60. I really love the concept of Framework, but so far I’m not impressed with their durability or support.
The old Dell XPS laptop that I had before this is 13 years old and still in great condition despite being too slow for my work needs now.
