  • Ever look into atomic/immutable distros? It’s a whole different way of doing things, but so far… I really dig it.

I have a tendency to muck about in the settings and configs, and make my system… Unstable…

But with an atomic distro, running flatpacks for most things and containers for anything exotic, my fingers stay out of the pie, and my system has been rock solid for 3/4 of a year, which is impressive for me.

I don’t think I’ll go back, not for my main machine anyway.

  • Just popping in to say raid is not a backup! It is for high availability!

Stuff’s expensive, it sucks, I’m not saying you need to spend more than you’re able to, I’m just warning you and others that while raid is often considered a pseudo-backup, it’s real purpose is high availability, so you can still access your data while your restoring from your actual backups somewhere else.

Best practice is 3-2-1, 3 copies of the data, on 2 different storage mediums, 1 of which is in a different physical location.

But honestly, if you can just get 2 copies, both on hard drives, both in your same house, you’re still miles ahead of simply relying on raid.

    Backup your data!

Thanks for coming to my TED talk 😂

  • Induction is so good. I have a glass top electric, but I bought a single burner induction for setting on the counter, and that thing is crazy.

My only complaints are coil ring/whine with my laminated steel pans, and also it’s too powerful, with not enough resolution in the lower power range.

It has 8 power levels. I use level 3 for making smash burgers (I put the whole thing on the porch to keep the grease/smoke outside. I don’t have a range vent), and it’s just a little too hot for that. Like a Blackstone grill on full blast.

Level 2 is just a little too cool for proper smash burgers.

Level 8 is insane, boils water practically instantly. When I first tried making smash burgers with it, I started at level 5 or 6, and literally burned the outside of the patties like charcoal. I didn’t notice because I was upwind of the “steam” which was actually a horrible smoke. Ruined the first couple of patties before getting it dialed in.

Induction is ridiculously efficient. All 1500w straight into the pan and nowhere else.

I still recommend it though, it’s the future. Under glass coils are annoying to cook with. You get used to it, but eh. Gas just makes the house hot and stinky, burns your pan handles and spoon/spatula handles, and makes my family’s asthma act up. I’ll never go gas again.

  • I’d say 1 or 2 times a week. Sometimes a lot more, sometimes a little less.

That said… My closest friends, the ones that I share the most common interests and hobbies with… I barely see at all. I try to coordinate to see them monthly, but sometimes it’s less. One has kids, the other has health problems.

The friends I hang out with the most, we have less in common, but we all get along well, and have some core interests and hobbies in common that I don’t actually have in common with my closest friends.

The two groups of friends are cordial with each other, but neither of them are as close with each other as I am with them separately. It’s interesting. I guess I have a diverse set of hobbies and friends.

I have other friends mixed in there too that I only see sporadically, that don’t belong to either group. I struggle to make time for them every few months, usually at least a couple times a year, even though we live close by.

I’m glad I have friends, and it’s good to be active and social. But I’m also a bit of an introvert, so some weeks I really just wanna stay home alone and veg. Many nights I do. But most times, if I get an invite to go do something/hang out, I take it. I’m really bad at planning things or inviting people over though, ironically. So I feel like I’ve lost friends over the years from not reaching out enough.

  • Slow Internet users unite!

Mine could be worse, it’s 30/10. Had it for a few years. Before that it was 10/1 though, for like 10 ish years. And before that? For a significant portion of my teenage years, it was 1.5/.5.

Before that, my young childhood was all dialup. DSL existed, we just didn’t have it 😬

Right now they’re putting fiber in my town though! Soon I’ll have access to 8000/8000 if I wanted! That’s way too much though, I’m gonna go for their lowest tier, which costs the same as I’m paying now, but gives me 300/300. Plenty fast for anything I need to do these days. Nice to know the capacity is there if I need more 🤷‍♂️
