Welp, time for me to find a different laptop to purchase. My old HP went out after nearly 10 years of use (thank you, Linux) due to motherboard failure (source: I work in tech support and laptop repair, plus I took it to Best Buy for a second opinion). I’m using a loaner laptop from a friend as an in-between, and while it’s not a bad laptop itself, I would like to get something, well, new. Plus I’m due for a stipend from work, so I’ll definitely have the money for it.

I’ve always heard that Framework is a good laptop, and have even recommended it to someone at work, but now I’m not so sure. As for me personally, I’ll have to hunt down a new laptop to purchase, as I definitely don’t want to support someone who follows the “if you have 10 people who sit with 1 Nazi” saying. I did get some recommendations from a Best Buy worker, but then they all come with Windows, and while I do have a guide on how to make Windows more privacy-friendly (and I can always just install WSL), I was looking forward to keeping Linux as my daily driver (as I do on my desktop).

I want to start this comment out by saying that I do agree that communities can change people, that if one is exposed to differing perspectives and belief systems, that one has the opportunity to change their outlook on the world. It’s definitely how I was able to get myself out of some very bad thought processes that were ingrained into me as a child. I would, however, like to grain-of-salt that to say that I was open to hearing about differing perspectives and belief systems.

Respectfully (to you and other leftists at least), as a disabled queer trans person, I am tired of the emotional labor it takes to justify why I should exist to people on the right. I agree it should be done to engage with as many people that are willing to take it in as possible. I have done it enough to know that there are times when you can try as hard as you can, but the person just won’t come over to your side of thought. I’m reminded of the saying “I can explain it for you, but I can’t understand it for you.”

Again, I don’t mean to direct any malice or misgiving towards you or anyone else engaging with this topic in good faith. I’m just tired of doing the work that other non-marginalized people should have been doing for years.

Tbf, and to my understanding, quantum computers will break current encryption algorithms, so it kind of will transform business overnight, just maybe not in the way these people are selling.

Tbh I would love to tinker around with my 3-year-old phone and get something working (I believe it was running Android 12 on last update), but I don’t necessarily have the time, willingness, or even knowledge of where to start. I’m a hobbyist programmer who mostly does full-stack web development these days with a sprig of application programming on Desktop. I’ve never even tried to go into mobile tech, and when I did, it was for small things like a Raspberry Pi which is essentially an ARM computer that can run mostly anything an AMD computer can. Phones aren’t like that.

I’ve heard that Mirlo.space is a good alternative to Bandcamp, and as an artist myself, it looks to be a good replacement.

If you want a challenge, I’d recommend googling The Legend of Zelda: Beta Quest. It’s a ROM hack where the load trigger table (that is, the table that contains what door leads to what scene) is randomized using the save file name. The only way to win is to get to the final Ganon fight and defeat him, and there is a way to lose since there’s this test area where Link can’t move and is then killed by some armored enemies, and the load trigger table can sometimes open that up.

Currently replaying The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD. Also have a save going for Stardew Valley and Baldur’s Gate 3 (well, I have a few games going for BG3; I have my solo game, I have a game with my partner, I have a game with my partner and a friend, and then I have a game with my partner and two of his friends). I should also get back into Pathfinder: Kingmaker, but I think at this point I need to restart my save because it’s been so long.

I do video editing myself in Linux and Kdenlive does pretty much everything I need. The UI is a bit odd to learn but I’d imagine any new editing software is gonna have a learning curve of some sort.

That’s fair, and I personally like PF2E better than 5E. After having GM’ed PF2E for about a year to a year and a half (this was from about 2021 to about 2022), I don’t feel like I could DM 5E again because it puts so much pressure on the DM to work (rulings over rules) and while some are okay with that, I personally don’t like it.

I mean I know the Internet is often a toxic place, but I don’t think telling him “oh well the Internet is just toxic, deal with it” would help the situation. I suppose one thing I’m looking for here is potentially an alternative to Reddit for searching up questions about Pathfinder such that he would avoid D&D comparisons in a negative light (I say a negative light just because Pathfinder was born from 3.5E, so comparisons are going to happen regardless because the two games are related).

Maybe the simplest way to do this is, when your partner tells you, “I read someone being mean about 5e” you just ask, “Do you agree with them?”

I mean I know he doesn’t, mostly because I’ve known him for a little over two years at this point.

I think the main issue is that people online are stating their opinion as fact or talking about PF2E and ignoring their biases against 5E. Asking people online to check their biases is a tall task I suppose, but I guess that goes back to my main question of this post of finding a knowledge center for Pathfinder that doesn’t include negativity towards 5E.
