What the whole Biden situation boils down to is this: At no point in history has a Presidential candidate ever been replaced as late in the campaign as the 2024 campaign was by the time people started seriously calling for Biden to step aside (i.e. after the debate.) The only close equivalent was in 1968, when Lyndon B. Johnson declined to run much earlier in the campaign, and it still resulted in a victory for Richard Nixon. Still, when confronted with a choice between fascism and not-fascism, many people (including many of the people in this very thread) decided to devote all their effort to throwing stones at the not-fascism side.

When Biden did finally step aside, surprise surprise, it resulted in a victory for fascism. Congratulations.

I’ve actually had to increase my consumption of Unilever products recently because often the only alternative is American. For instance, I switched from Ivory soap (owned by Proctor & Gamble) to Dove even though Dove is more expensive.

Which really runs against the “Everything Trump does is actually Russia!” line that gets posted around here incessantly. There’s nothing Putin would want more than to have access to those briefings, but his useful idiot is too much of an idiot to be useful here. Trump is on Putin’s side, sure, but most of what he does, especially in this term, is the result of home-grown American authoritarianism, not orders from Russia.

If the collapse was going to happen anyway then it would’ve been best for Trump to sit out the election and let it happen under Biden’s watch.

The thing is, it doesn’t really benefit anyone. If you’re Russia, for instance, it would be better to destroy the entire democratic world than just the United States, and Trump could have done that if he’d just moved more slowly on some of his actions (for instance, if he’d remained quiet about Canada until after our election then we’d be in a very different situation now.) Trump’s just an idiot, plain and simple, and the people he surrounds himself with are either idiots themselves or too cowardly to call the idiots out on their idiocy.

It’s a mistake to think that either he or his handlers have some kind of master plan and that everything Trump does is the result of expert manoeuvring that just looks like stupidity. That promotes defeatism and gets people to surrender prematurely. As long as people stand up to Trump, he will lose.

Except that velocity includes a direction component while neither distance nor time do. This would be a speedraptor.
