Everything gets compiled at some point to be able to run.

Lot of people running large gentoo server farms will compile and run binary’s. Even Gentoo is officially supporting binary packages for their stable branch. Package set is ever growing right now too

Has had Musl for awhile here is the install stage https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/#amd64-advanced . Bunch of docs on their wiki too. Gentoo is a rolling release you are correct but there is testing and stable branches. Stable branch is enterprise production ready. I know of a few hardware vendors that are using a custom gentoo builds under the hood. One of them is a big name storage array company that people spend hundreds if not millions on their arrays.

My experience with Void was hyper rolling release . You get things quickly kind of like Arch.

Gentoo stable runs a little bit older software for stability sake. With that being said you can mix and match stable with testing. I would assume there is some gotchas but I have not run into any yet. I am running the testing branch just for KDE software right now to have the latest and greatest KDE but a super stable base.

Definitely something to take a look at if you’re a more advanced user. I am coming back to Gentoo after about 15 years off and just loving it. Compile times are not that bad with new hardware. My Intel NUC I am running on is crushing it. I remember X taking like a week to compile back in like 2003 lol

Just read up on Timeshift and that should be do able. I would just point them to diff folder names the host name. If your doing BTRFS snapshots it’s a little harder but still do able. You can look at the native send-receive support in BTRFS. I have never used it myself but it worked really will with ZFS

Lot of just general progress, Linux was so fringe when I started in 2002 compared to now. Most enterprise customers are using Linux the past 15 years and hardware venders are now seeing more and more Linux adoption. We can kind of thank Chrome a bit for that but also more people generally having an interest and using it and developing drivers for their hardware

They are quite good. I just used one for a Gentoo install because I have better things to do with my time. Can I do it for the millionth time sure by hand sure but what’s the point? End result is more consistent than me as a human doing it by hand

Not sure where you have heard they are slower. Most of my experience has they are faster but I will say BSD kind of sucks on a laptop.

I would see what’s supported and then run something like Fluxbox as your WM

OpenSuse Tumbleweed, gets you on the bleeding edge and I have had 1 issue like 5 years ago where I got a broken xorg driver. Rolled back the patch using snapper/btrfs and was back in business. Upgraded like a week later and everything was fine. System is still chugging all these years later.

Also nothing wrong with running Debian Sid another distro I never ran into that many problems.

I was okay with it getting thicker as well. I never got into the thinner is better thing. If I wanted something thin and light I would get an Air not a MBP. Still love the form factor of my 2010 MBP. I also really enjoyed Snow Leopard

Very excited to see the rest of this series. I still run some BSD box’s. I really really enjoy it. I really wish they would support Docker at this point but it’s complex and I get it with the developers they have. Jails still work so so well. I am on a box I think I installed end of FreeBSD 9 or 10 on and just keep upgrading. That’s probably get to the 10 year mark at this point. I will have to go and check. It’s such a smooth system to run really a dream. Wish more people tried it especially

Great distro! I ran Lunar Linux so Source Mages sister from the fork of Sorcerer Linux. Lunar I know is still going and updating. Need to drop into their IRC channel for support and what not. Wonder if Source Mage is still kicking. Amazing how great the bash scripts were to run it all. I feel like if they added binary support they would get a lot more traction

I thought the motors and trans on them were fairly reliable if you did basic maintenance on them

I really remember heatsinks being a thing on overclocked systems around that time frame and then once we got to P4 cpus the chilling towers appeared those things were massive
