  • I am a software developer, I understand what goes into developing software. He is allowed to value his work at whatever he thinks it’s worth.

But as users we are allowed to think he is asking too much or pushing too many ads or whatever. It’s not disrespect, it’s an opinion, about a mobile app that now has ads on the main feed and in every comment section, that only works based on a platform that is very specifically known for being open and not pushing ads. And it’s an especially high price for an app that is still very under development and has only recently just gotten an update for the first time in months, even when some features had stopped working.

I have no issues with him asking to be compensated for his work, and I am glad he makes it available for free, but the ads are getting intrusive, and we are all entitled to our opinions. I don’t think there was anything disrespectful about the way I shared my opinion, but I do think it’s crap to tell us we are being disrespectful just because you don’t share that opinion.

  • I’m fine paying, but $20 to remove ads is a very big ask for a mobile app, when it was maybe $3 or $5 for the old reddit app. Especially so when it seems he comes and goes and updates to a very in development app have stopped for months at a time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not making any demands, I agree with everything you say, but the ad removal option is quite a lot especially when there are many free lemmy apps too.

  • He was in a food court in a mall, not exactly near his car.

Again though, I agree with the sentiment here. Guns should not be the answer to something like this, and shooting was almost certainly an overreaction.

But since it is the US there’s no way to know either of the prankster had a gun and was potentially ready to use it too.

All of that to say is that while I think shooting was not warranted, I, and a lot of others it seems, feel a lot of sympathy for this guy who was just minding his own business, felt threatened, and has probably had his life ruined because of what he felt he needed to do because of the actions of this asshole YouTuber.

  • So, I am absolutely not defending the shooting itself, but everything I have read about this is that he definitely tried to remove himself from the situation but the “prankster” followed him and continued to harass him.

And to make things worse, the so called prankster had already been kicked out of the mall the day before and came back and was specifically trying to avoid security.

So yea, shooting was almost certainly an overreaction, but I do then wonder how exactly you are supposed to deal with something like this when this asshole won’t listen and won’t let you leave.

  • In fairness, voyager ruined the Borg, not Picard.

Also not really sure about that whole being put in his place by women comment… Is it just that you feel he was put in his place at all, or that it was a woman who did it? Cause if it’s the latter…

Anyways I feel that would be a mistake not to at least give SNW or lower decks a try as you never actually know until you try, but I’m not going to sit here and try and convince you beyond saying what I already have if you have already made up your mind. Then again, it’s probably a good idea if things being different upset you this much. All the best.

And don’t worry I know you didn’t mean that I personally ruined star trek.

  • How far do you get into it before you get tired of it? I know you mention that quark and odo on the mountain episode and that’s at least later on.

Personally I like ds9 because it very much was still star trek but managed to show it in a somewhat darker way that felt a little more “realistic” and less of that feeling that everyone lives in utopia. The dominion war towards the end was also very interesting in that they started doing some serialized story telling, something that didn’t really happen in trek or in tv much at all at that point. By today’s standards it is certainly a bit dated, but still, an interesting and different take I thought.

I do also happen to like the characters, which I think is essential for any show. So if you never really liked them, then yea I imagine it wouldn’t be fun to watch.
