To be a good succulent parent you do need to tend toward the neglect side of things.

Potted plants in general tend to get over watered thanks to too much love and attention from their owners. Roots need the opportunity to dry out and pots do a good job of resisting that.

Many first time growers who experience dead/dying plants think it’s because they’re not doing enough, when the inverse is often the case: they’re doing too much.

Agree on jade. Older ones look great IMO.

Don’t ever expose it to young kids. They love whacking it because it makes chunks fall off :(

We made that mistake with our own kids (two human, one kitten).

Our jade is pretty big + old, and the damage happened years ago. At this point it’s probably due for a good pruning to help it have a better shape. The plant itself has some air roots that form every once in a while, but it’s happily flowering currently so it can’t be all that mad.

OP said in an earlier post that they’ve had the plant for years and that it started life as the top of a grocery store pineapple. I’m somewhat tempted to give it a go just for giggles.

Week? Man. I have a large Jade and water the thing evey other month. Sometimes it goes even longer than that. It’s happily starting it’s spring bloom after coming out from under grow lights in my basement to sit in front of a north facing window. All our smaller succulents are on a monthly ish schedule, but that’s not anything we rigorously watch/pay attention to. Weekly for a succulent seems too often, but if they’re happy they’re happy.

I work at a big company. We have tons and tons of problems to go solve that are getting little attention in addition to having a lot of redundant and/or “what would you say you do here” type positions. Most of this happens by accident, but it’s nearly impossible to unwind and redeploy those teams. My guess is that the big reasons why is because of leadership not wanting to look bad - a mix of “why did you staff this to begin with?” and “why did you let this go on for so long?” When these groups are eventually found during a reorg they tend to be let go vs redeployed, which makes it even harder for the remaining groups to do anything. The cycle is truly silly.

I understand what you’re saying - better to give the early design to a person who gardens as a primary interest than someone who 3D prints as a primary interest since the gardener will likely have insight into what works or doesn’t work for the act of gardening. There are some of us in both camps, but the overlap probably isn’t that big.

I’m assuming when you say 3D design, you using either CAD or modeling software? If yes, you could consider selling STLs as well as the finished product. Giving away, or heavily discounting, STLs for an alpha/beta run, would eliminate your shipping and material cost for testing. You would still be able to sell physical parts, as well as produce parts that are nicer than your average hobbyist will produce (for example, print molds and cast the planter in a more traditional material).

I agree with your overall sentiment, but I personally find googles fuel savings optimistic and/or flat out misleading. “Hey, you could turn off your usual route here and get there in a similar time… Or you could stay on your usual route and save 2% on gas” seems to be a very frequent occurrence for me.

I also don’t think that needs AI. The pathfinding algorithm just needs to apply different weights to the choices based on things like changes in elevation, number of stop signs, total distance, etc. Navigation systems from yester-year could do this well before the prevalence of AI. That said, AI can be used to develop and/or tune these algorithms instead of having a dedicated team of humans focused on this specific area.

From a farming perspective, herbavores require less input to raise.

Hypothetical example: to raise one herbivore you need an input of 3 grains. If your carnivore requires more than one herbivore’s worth of input you’re looking at needing more grain, plus having to rear the herbivore(s).

I don’t know if there are flavor implications between the two and if those differences would decrease if both were farmed.

I’m constantly surprised that a swath of the populous thinks that everyone else thinks the same things they do, has the same motives they do, etc. People are largely aware that there are introverts and extroverts, along with different learning styles, but that’s where most people seem to stop. It extends well beyond that. People are all over the spectrum on anxiety, curiosity, desire to learn new things, where they prefer to position themselves in group settings, ability to understand where others are coming from, etc. Often when people with differences in the above meet, they fail to empathize with each other and are befuddled by that the other person doesn’t think and act the way they do. We to sort ourselves into similar social groups, but it’s especially amusing to watch this play out in a work environment.

I am aware of them, but given my general lack of focused fitness I am fairly ambivalent about a fitness tracker. I do spend a decent amount of time chasing my kida outside and take the stairs/park far away at work, but my smartphone does a good enough job at tracking those activities.

A smart watch/fitness tracker makes sense if you’re actively engaging in use cases that they will enhance, but that’s not the case for me right now. I just want an easy way of knowing what time it is and I’ve learned to manage notifications on my phone so the important ones still catch my attention.

I’m also not a proper “watch guy”. I have one watch I wear daily and two vintage watches that don’t run very well and I don’t have the $$ to repair so they sit in a drawer.

Soviet watches are a great rabbit hole. Thankfully, I’ve managed to stay on the sidelines for the most part. I do have a CCCP automatic that will only keep time for more than one day if I wind it, but that’s it. There are a whole bunch of interesting designs out there though.

I bought a mechanical watch about five months ago and honestly, it’s been great. I’ve been through… way too many smart watches over nearly ten years and was getting tired of not getting more than two-three years out of them before something failed. It seemed wasteful. Yeah, standalone GPS tracking and what not was neat, but I nearly always have my phone on me these days. I wore watches, granted Iron Man and not mechanical, all through middle and highschool and ditched them when cellphones really started becoming ubiquitous. It’s funny how I’ve come full circle.

Certification to be a bartender? Where at? I worked in the restaurant business for a decent amount of time when I was younger. The restaurant I worked at had a training regime for bartenders so they would learn how to pour accurately and learn the recipes for a ton of drinks, but it wasn’t mandated by the government. Front of house staff from several establishments in the area would hang out and our restaurants were far more lax.

But but but… I want the little offshoot niche community to grow! I also want content to get seen by more than 5 people.

In reality there just isn’t the user mass to make small/niche communities viable right now, so you see more general communities filling the void.

An easy example is 3D printing. There are two 3D printing communities in the lemmyverse. There’s also a ‘fix my print’ community that’s a ghost town and a few printer specific communities that are also ghost towns. Posts in these more specialized communities tend to get a consistent level of votes, but very few comments.

I’ve intentionally been trying to seed more content, but it’s hard without literally posting the same thing in two spots.

Add in people posting the same thing across the various “same community” on all the various instances for extra silliness.

Agree on communities over here getting created during the exodis, seeing a small surge, and then kind of withering. I’m subbed to 15ish communities that aren’t even all that niche (3D printing, photography, woodworking) and it’s rare that they all get one post per day. There are obviously people lurking because posts will get comments, but I think we’re all a little wary of being the person to post a bunch of content for fear of no one else doing so.

Which version? I don’t have any troubleshooting tips, but things have been pretty normal over here.

Monoculture anything is bad. For example, many parks will have tons of trees but if you pay attention you’ll likely on see the same handful of species.
