If someone links a Matrix account they don’t own, the person on Matrix would probably notice it when people start messaging them

As suggested elsewhere in the thread, you might consider opening an alt on Lemmy.zip, it’s a stable and well managed instance.
Exporting and importing settings takes a few clicks.
I just downloaded it myself to check. Indeed all comments are not there, but you can indeed see at least the number of comments on the crossposts and easily switch.
That’s probably the closest we can get at the moment
