  • I put my mom on Ubuntu with KDE 10 years ago. I had far less problems with her on Linux than I ever did with Vista and 7. It got to the point she was calling me multiple times a week.

I didn’t have to but I did one Ubuntu reinstall in that entire time only because I made /boot the default partition size at installation and years later it filled up constantly. I got sick of going over there to clean it up and it coincided with her getting a new computer.

My mom installed printer drivers, and Cisco VPN software from run packages instead of apt and set up multi- monitors on her own after I taught her how to use the terminal, so it’s possible for the elderly.

  • Hence the double quotes. During the ceasefire someone in Hamas will stupidly fire a rocket not even in the direction of Israel, someone in Hamas will use it as an opportunity to catch Israel off-guard and fire a rocket towares Israel, Israel will lie and say a rocket was fired at them, or an IDF soldier will fire a rocket and say it was a Palestinian.

In all cases the bouncer from New Jersey will retaliate by slaughtering a massive number of women and children and maybe a combatant or three.

  • Have you learned nothing from paywalled articles and blogs from 2002? You get them interested in what you have to say. Make them laugh. Compliment them. Put in a little work first.

By then you’ll both be so into it that nicely asking for what you want to do is a mere (but neccessary) formality (consent is always required – Ed.).

Then after a few paragraphs you whip out the unskippable popup and stop the fun until they show you the goods, and they’ll give up that fake email address you want so bad willingly.

You don’t go right for it right out of the gate and shoot your wad immediately. It’s a good way to make sure no wants to check you out again. It’s just bad form. People talk.

  • The link from Lemmy takes you to an email sign-up page instead of actual content that requires you click “No Thanks” first before you can continue. I should have stopped there but I didn’t. To bypass the sign up page copy the link and remove the “r” variable from the query string first.

The only thing I saw referencing Nobaru linux was a link near the top of the page to who knows where. The rest of the page is filled with words haphazardly forced together against their will, and it shows.

  • They want to do like they did with The Hurt Locker all those years ago: movie didn’t pull in what they wanted it to, so they got a list of IPs from setting up a seeder, took those to the ISPs (who turned over customer names and addresses asap) and sent scare letters to all the customer addresses they received threatening to sue each person in each household for millions per number of copies they estimated (made up the difference in cost vs actuals plus a bonus on earnings for mgmt) were shared across torrents. Unless you paid them a couple thousand dollars instead.

They knew most would throw the letter away like the garbage it was, but a lot of people paid. Especially elderly folks whose grandkids came over and used the computer to do it. It works!

  • Use whatever distro you feel comfortable with. That being said, there are definitely good ones and bad ones. I use Arch btw. That’s the beauty of Linux tho. You can try a distro and if you dont like it you can literally install a new distro over the old one by blowing away everything but the /home partition. Did I mention yet I use Arch? I use Arch btw. The package managers are such a great tool to get a system up and running in a short time, but you can always compile everything from scratch if you want. You can config your programs with the default settings and let the OS do it for you, or you can micromanage every single config option and take a little more time to personalize your machine. I’ve told you I use Arch? I use Arch btw.

Yeah, Linux is great! And in case you were wondering I use a distro called Arch Linux.
