I love how even this simple message is actually signaling the base. When the GOP leaders are saying to stop saying racist things, they’re effectively telling everyone to keep thinking them and just to shut up for a while. The message is loudly sent and will be partly received, no doubt.

Lmao they let the foxes into the henhouse and are now concerned that the farmer now knows about it and is coming by shortly with his ranch rifle and a few boxes of ammo

I am quite enjoying watching the Republicans hoist themselves on their own petard

          They’re both, no doubt.

But right now they’re pushing the racism hard. I give it a week and it’ll be pushing the sexism hard.

They are already claiming she shouldn’t be eligible because she has no children of her own, only step children. No guy ever has been told he should be ineligible for office over not having children.

There hasn’t been a president without children since the civil war. In fact, unless my Wikipediaing failed me, the last time there was a major party candidate without children was 1876 when Samuel J. Tilden lost to Ruthorford B. Hayes.

I strongly suspect it would be a major issue for a male candidate to be childless. The requirements for a presidential candidate are extremely conservative. They have to be married. They have to have children. They have to be christian – even being Catholic rather than Protestant has been a major issue for a few, including JFK and to a certain extent Biden. They also have to be tall. Since the advent of TV in 1928, the shorter candidate has only won 6 times. The taller candidate has won 17 times.

Yes, there’s a ton of sexism about Harris, but in this case a guy would probably be attacked if he were childless too.

Everyone understands that Biden didn’t pick a black woman as his Vice President by coincidence, so Republicans could push the “DEI candidate” message without sounding explicitly racist, simply by attacking Harris as inexperienced. The people they want to reach would come to their desired conclusion. It’s a good thing that the stable geniuses in that party won’t or can’t control their mouths, since many voters who are hostile to the idea of DEI still don’t want to think of themselves as explicitly racist.

It’s funny, I don’t remember a peep from Republicans about DEI for Obama choosing an old white dude as a running mate. It’s almost as if DEI is a stand-in for another word. Maybe media could do their job and posit what that word might be.

Yeah, every VP is a DEI candidate.

When they talk about “balancing the ticket”, they’re looking specifically for diversity. Old to balance young. Southern to balance northern. Experienced to balance inexperienced, etc.

Even when both candidates are white men, they are looking for someone who will bring in voters that the presidential candidate won’t on their own. Dick Cheney was an old white man, but he was chosen to balance Bush Jr’s young age and relative lack of political experience. Even Mike Pence was a DEI hire because he was specifically chosen to appeal to religious evangelical voters who didn’t trust Trump.
