I feel I know the answer, but one wonders, do these people ever lie awake at night thinking “I’m directly responsible for the premature deaths of two people because I wanted another number on my quota and another insignificant-to-the-budget fine”?

Because I’d eat my gun from the guilt.

The good cops do, and they quit because of that mental burden. The ones that stick around are the ones that aren’t bothered by seeing or doing horrific shit. Over time, the group distills down to only the bad ones as the good ones are chased away.

      Thinking about that lawsuit.

      do these people

The answer is in your question. Cops aren’t people. If they were, they would act like it.
