Bust police unions or make individual officers civilly liable for these actions.
Police unions aren’t like normal labor unions and are often the reason they get “leave” rather than being immediately terminated.
Adding civil liability ( removing qualified immunity) would mean this student would have a ton of attorneys knocking down their door to sue the pants of the officer.
Either or both of these would act as a deterrent to bad behavior. I, personally, think both should happen. Officers are citizens and shouldn’t get different treatment.
