i’m new to this so please excuse me if it’s something obvious. the linked page says it doesn’t matter which instance i’m registered with, just pick one. i followed this advice and i’m here now. i’m subscribed to a bunch of communities from other instances too. so what difference does it make that i’m at sdf and not somewhere else, where is the lesser drama to be found in all this?

Someone may create a community about a topic that others do not like which may lead to calls for defederation with that instance from other instances.

i hope it’s not a plug that"s going to be pulled often because in this case a complete defederation of everything from everything is just a matter of time.

doesn’t it all have that old fidonet vibe… you also could participate in anything as long as your uplinks agreed on what echoconferences they subscribe to.

If you have the resources, you could host your own instance for just yourself and have access to everything. Unless someone decides they don’t like you and defederates with you. With how often people call for defederation, I think eventually it will end up kind of like the old internet where you had to go to multiple sites for different topics.
