They were just firing people investigating Musk and Trump whilst simultaneously stealing private citizen records/data.
Given how quickly they fired it up and dropped it, it is clear that it had some ulterior goal besides the goals they stated. With the other evidence we have available, I think your explanation is quite likely.

I was reminded today that they got rid of USAID which has led to hundreds of thousands of deaths. I was going to say we need another Luigi, but i think you need a whole army at this point.
