Marijuana sales in Arizona slid faster in the second quarter of 2025 than they did in the first quarter, marking the largest year-over-year decrease since voters approved recreational cannabis use in 2020.
Canadian here:
What I see up north is that most people buying from retails stores are casual cannabis users. The daily smokers are only buying by the ounce and/or switching back to the black market.
There’s also the internet market. I dont know about the USA, but in Canada there are online retailers, which not all are legal, but they’ll mail you cannabis for a solid % less than retail stores.
There’s also the aspect of the wider economy. Even myself, while I have not cut back, I purchase less because I’m not going out and sharing with as many people as prior to 2020.
Why switch back to the black market?
-
Price.
-
Quantity limits. Like thc limits in edibles.
-
Strain variety. Especially if you prefer older genetics.
-
Black & grey market. Online retailers. Native land dispensaries.
Ah I see, thanks!

Was real confused about the chart until I realized if you have your browser set for dark mode the colors are distorted
Edit: that said, I’m sure as the people get poorer overall, the recreational purchases will fall slowly across the board. Hell the medical purchases as well
Is this a new economic downturn indicator? Recreational weed sales are down, buy gold
