We all knew it was coming. If you’re on the ACA Medicaid extension or Medicaid in general be prepared to have mandatory work hours to get access to a fundamental human right all so rich people can make a few extra bucks.

Land of the free?

Work requirements when most of the many people on Medicaid have it because they can’t work to begin with.

These cancerous shitbags should be shot.

Edited to fix wording for Poindexter below.

Just gonna throw this out there, it’s a shitty job market right now, and it’s only going to get worse. Having a job isn’t always possible when you are physically and mentally willing to accept work of any kind.

For anyone effected, republicans aren’t great at fine print, you might actually be able to meet the requirements with a volunteer job.

And for all you so called Christians out there, this is where your church should step up and “employ” people so they can get basic healthcare.

I pay taxes so the government that is supposed to care for my fellow citizens and I, can provide at least temporary insurance for losing a job and as necessary for healthcare.

Republicans said the requirement could motivate people to find employment — maybe even a job that comes with health insurance. […] [They] buy their sandwiches from the food truck with their food stamps

Republicans are extremely deluded about real life.

Jesus. I know I’m correcting them and not you but come the fuck on! 92% of able bodied adults on medicaid work and you can’t buy prepared food from a food truck with food stamps. You have to make your own sandwiches. Theoretically a food truck selling only cold sandwiches COULD take EBT in some circumstances…they don’t for obvious reasons.

This kinda defeats the point. If you’ve got steady income then theoretically you can get marketplace insurance.

Actually you can get free health insurance for a family of two if living on 500 a week at least in some places. Full time at 12.50 or 25 hours at 20 an hour or anything in between. If that seems like a lot consider 2 people can easily eat $500 in food at present prices, rent can easily cost $1200 for a shitty apartment in a shitty neighborhood. yada yada. This is basically about nothing to live on.

Notably many families have one worker because one has health problems or is needed to do childcare because the amount they would earn is actually less than childcare alone let alone benefits + childcare expenses. Many folks who are disabled in fact receive basically no help of any kind if the other partner works or if they cannot spend years fighting it out in court.

Lots of people already living marginal lives will be effected.

Another example consider older relatives too young to receive medicare but not employable because of some combination of age and health. They might live with relatives but rely on government health insurance.

Another yet consider people who who living with relations providing childcare and relying on the government for health care. They effectively ARE working for board but making them try to compete with 20 year olds to work at McD will likely result in damage to the family and the person who will lose health care if they can’t work or the family who will lose childcare if they can.

Yeah, my brother is fucked. He has a felony record which keeps him from getting most jobs, and a chronic illness that keeps him from qualifying for manual labor jobs.

I forget where I read this recently and I can’t confirm the veracity of this claim, but supposedly 80 million Americans are on Medicaid. If that’s true, that’s close to 1/4 of all Americans that would be affected by this.

Whelp… If only a majority of them voted we might not be in this shit. Pain is a coming and it’s gonna suck. Sorry for those that tried to prevent it and failed.

37 million of them are children. People are also on Medicaid because they’re poor. Which is also correlated with problems voting. Then there’s the distribution of people on Medicaid; which is much lighter in swing states. (And some others but those states are the ones that matter)

Basically, there’s no realistic way they could have swung the election and asking the poorest and most put upon people in our country to be the ones to save it is the height of entitlement.

Each state was about 40k votes. If this is 25% of the population I’m sure there’s a chunk that shot themselves in the foot here. And yea, I grieve for those caught in this. It fucking sucks. People need to wake up and vote to improve their lives vs us barreling towards violent revolution.

That’s the problem though, it’s not 25% of each state, and roughly half of them are kids. So you’re looking at a number more like 8% before you even get into voting barriers for people with poverty issues.

I somewhat agree, but I bet it’s a bit more complicated than that. Whether rooted in reality or not, part of me thinks that a lot of those 80 million people (if the numbers I saw are accurate) are comprised of children and some quantity of people who can’t or aren’t really mentally competent enough to make rational voting decisions. Feels like it’s hurting the most vulnerable, rather than the people who are literally asking for it.

Mostly, I’m just a little surprised to hear that the number is so high. If 25% of the population alone is on medicaid, and assuming there’s any where near comparable percentage of people on medicare, it’s hard to understand the argument against universal and/or single payer healthcare systems.

Almost all the ones who can work are working. The people who will lose insurance are those who can’t work in any case
